Care
To create our products we choose our materials with care and purpose. We prioritise the use of organic, natural materials. We follow strict material guidelines that inform our design and manufacturing.
We preference the use of GOTS certified organic cotton – all of our jersey, french terry and Home bedding use organic cotton.
A sustainable fibre made from the flax plant, and requires less water to grow and process than cotton or man made fibres. We use 100% linen in our cushions and parts of our apparel collection.
We use certified, traceable wool yarns that are ethically sourced from UPW or Novotex yarns.
A blend of 70% Lenzing Viscose and 30% Lenzing Tencel. With excellent environmental credentials, using fibres derived from certified sustainable wood sources and using a closed loop production process recycling 99% of water and solvent.
We're really proud of our partnership with Kala Swaraj Foundation, a non-profit collective of weavers based in Sausar in Central India. The cotton is handloomed, hand dyed, and hand woven, and the weaving community is paid well above typical weaving wages.
Tanned using tannins, a naturally derived material from tree bark. A slower method of tanning which does not use heavy metals such as chromium. We only use vegetable tanned leather in our collections.
Textile printing and dyeing
We digitally print all our fabrics using AZO-free inks. Digital printing reduces material wastage and requires less washing and water usage in production. Our dyeing mills use the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 - a testing standard which means that no harmful substances have been used in production.
Trims and tags
- We preference coconut shell buttons, a sustainable material that is a by-product of coconut farming
- Our fabric labels are 100% organic cotton
- Paper tags use 100% recycled paper
Low production quantities
We are very careful each season to only produce where there is demand for it. This is less wasteful and makes our designs more special. We are also mindful that a small amount of sale items make our products more accessible for those on lower incomes, so we are comfortable for small amounts of stock to reach an end of season sale.
Through collaborations with carefully selected craftspeople, each of our pieces celebrates the expertise, craft and beauty of their maker’s community. Transparency is important to us. We have visited all of our makers and each manufacturer has been independently audited.
We choose all materials used in our products with intention and care.
We only use natural materials OR naturally derived materials with an excellent manufacturing process. Properly caring for your item will extend its life, preserve natural resources and keep waste out of landfill.
We encourage you to only wash garments where needed.
Cold water on short washes should be preferenced where possible.
Between washes, garments can be spot cleaned or aired on hanger to keep fresh.
Regular leather care involves a wipe down of the leather with a damp cloth to remove superficial scratches. Treat with leather conditioner occasionally (we recommend bi-monthly).
Let damp or wet leather dry naturally - never dry leather with a direct heat source as this can warp the leather.
If your garment needs altering, take to a tailor to adjust - they can take in, let out and adjust hems so you can keep wearing.
If your bag needs some reconditioning, take it to bag repairers - they can bring back aged leather to give your bag new life.
Replacing worn soles on shoes is an option too - we have a great Melbourne repairer we can recommend! Just get in touch.
Donation or swapping is also a good way to move your Nancybird item to a place where it will be used and worn. We can suggest organisations such as Fitted for Work or Dress For Success to donate items.
To resell, check out Facebook BSS groups for more.
If your item has reached its end of life, there are some good solutions.
Upparel and Textile Recyclers Australia are two Australian options - you can send them your old textiles and they create pathways for new life of the textile fibres.
