Progress

Nancybird was established in 2002 in Naarm/Melbourne as a handmade range of bags and purses by founder Emily Wright, who is still the sole owner of the brand.

Our collections have evolved to include apparel and homewares, along with collaborations with emerging and established Australasian artists.

We are represented in stores by about 100 beautiful stockists throughout Australia and New Zealand.

If you’ve ever called Nancybird, you’ve probably chatted with Steph! Our star office manager, taking care of most aspects of the nitty gritty of our office and warehouse operations, as well as looking after all our wonderful wholesalers.
Wearing two important hats at Nancybird – selling our collections to our wholesale customers and as our production specialist. Managing the technical aspects of our apparel range, Colette specs this collection so that our clothing fits, quality and finishing are of the highest level.
Designing our beautiful apparel collection from concept to photoshoots, Sarah’s super talent is bringing our textiles to life, creating stunning pieces that work with the lives of our customers and that sit harmoniously together as a collection and as stand alone pieces.
Our Marketing Queen, Monique manages all aspects of our marketing and social media presence, from creating our seasonal catalogues to dreaming up feel good campaigns for our audience.
A star member of our small warehouse team, Claire works across dispatch, customer service and returns.  She’s also a talented illustrator in her spare time!
The lovely Michelle and Simone process our online orders, picking and packing with care to get your order out the door to you!

The commitments of a business like ours extend to our staff, our makers, our customers, our wider community and ultimately, to the planet.

1% for the Planet
We are members of 1% for the Planet - a network committed to donate 1% of gross sales to environmental organisations and charities. Last year we donated $31,588 to charities such as the Bob Brown Foundation, Seed Mob, One Girl and Bush Heritage.

Through intentional giving to charities that support the protection of Australian flora and fauna, assisting the mobilisation of First Nation’s young people protecting country, women and girl’s education and re-entry into the workforce, we hope that this will contribute to a less destructive, more equitable world.

Seamless Members
In 2024 we became a members of the clothing stewardship program, which recognises that the brands that make our clothes are responsible for their entire lifespan. We pay a levy for each garment we produce, which contributes to the education and promotion of more responsible consumer practises and expanding textile recycling facilities in Australia.

Diversity
We show our designs on people that represent our wider community - a variety of sizes, ages and heritage. We are committed to size inclusivity, and are happy to say that almost our full collection has a size range from 6 to 22.

Material Guidelines
We follow strict material guidelines, which means we do not use standard cellulose fabrics, chromium tanned leathers or any petroleum derived fabrics (except a very low percentage of spandex in our denim to provide stretch). Read more about the fabrics we preference here.

Shipping
We strongly prioritise sea freight over air freight as sea freight used only 1.37% of the carbon emissions compared with air freight.
For FY24, we shipped 51.6 cubic metres via sea freight, and 13.9 cubic metres via air freight, with carbon emissions of 17 tonnes from our air freight, and 8.52 tonnes from our sea freight.
We have freight carbon emission reduction targets of 25% in place for FY25/26 compared with FY23/24.

Solar Powered
We have solar power in our two Melbourne spaces - our studio and warehouse. We have a 5.3kW and a 6.6 kW system. For the FY23/24, we used:
- 5078 kwh grid electricity
- 5154 kwh solar panel generated electricity
- 8725 kwh was exported from our solar panels to the grid

Our progress towards a more sustainable future is ongoing.

Our focus for 2025/26 includes:

- gaining B-Corp certification

- reduction target of 25% in carbon emissions of our freight from suppliers to our HQ (from FY24 levels)

- a 10% increase in use of certified materials (GOTS organic for example)

- create an Impact Report to show our current position, detail our efforts and transparently show our goals for the 25/26 period
