To bring an artist we've admired for years into the daily lives of Nancybird, we travelled a little further this season: meet Margaret Smith, who paints from a mountainside studio in Chattanooga, Tennessee, though it's time spent in Utah that shapes her work most. Sweeping altitudes where the air sharpens every colour, quiet moments beneath silvery pines and breezy aspens, luminous water framed by wide open skies, this is the country she returns to again and again, and the country behind every artwork in this collection.

Her landscapes and still life paintings have a light, intuitive touch and a real sensitivity to colour, whether she's painting creatures, florals or the open range. There's a freedom in her loose, whimsical hand that felt like the perfect match for the trans-seasonal pieces in Mountain Range.

Chatting with Margaret we learnt more on her process, the artworks that now live across our garments and bags, and how she dresses for the season ahead.

When painting these landscapes, and most landscapes, I try to find balance using colour that honours the landscape but also invokes a specific emotion, whether it's tranquility, happiness, wonder or humility. In these particular paintings, I wanted to achieve a sense of midday light, a summer's day in the elements. That wondrous feeling when the high sun surrounds you with warmth and bright colour.

Nature has an enormous humbling effect, this feeling that we are part of something much larger than ourselves. The Mountain West, even more so, has an illuminating impact on presence, invoking a meditative moment, and I ceaselessly chase the exploration and attainment of this in my work.

I've been able to gather lots of imagery over the years. I love to do quick sketches, but once I get to canvas it's more of a conversation, or rather a dance with colour and brushstroke. I am never beholden to a composition, but rather an energy or feeling of the work.

I love a structured top with a looser fit, so I melt over the Summer Shirt in Palisade. I'm also drawn to the scale of the artwork, creating abstract forms of colour that still allude to the landscape in the work. The Hart Dress also has this ethereal quality, I gravitate towards its peaceful palette and the drapery of the dress.

During the summer I usually wear very casual clothing, I love to be cool and comfortable. When I dress up for a summer evening out, my outfit usually reflects an earthier palette, looser fitting with a relaxed vibe.
