About Us

Nancybird was established in 2002 in Naarm/Melbourne as a handmade range of bags and purses by founder Emily Wright.

Our iconic collections reflect our innate curiosity towards artisanship, art and the natural landscape.

We are moving towards the aim of sustainabilty - mindful consumption in our deliberately small production runs, the use of materials with outstanding environmental credentials, working with makers with excellent social compliance such as non-profit organisations and Fair Trade members.

We use diverse models in our campaigns, representing the diversity of our audience. Our extended size range now sits from size 6 to 22, with more to come.

We are represented in stores by about 100 beautiful stockists throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Through collaborations with a global network of carefully selected craftspeople, each of our pieces celebrates the expertise, craft and beauty of their maker’s community.

Passionate about good making and good design, our design philosophy emphasises longevity and quality.

We mindfully consider the environmental impact of our products and celebrate the hands that make them.

Transparency is important to us, one of the ways we practise this is by visiting our makers regularly.

Each season we collaborate with artists, bringing their work to life on textiles, on leather - printed, embroidered, embossed. We champion these artists and their diversity.

Care

To create our products we choose our materials with care and purpose. We prioritise the use of organic, natural materials. We follow strict material guidelines that inform our design and manufacturing.

We design considered wares for our community – beautiful clothing to be worn throughout the seasons, leathergoods that will become cherished companions, homewares that will bring colour and joy to your space. We revere the eye of the artist, the expertise of the craftsperson, and the authenticity of natural materials. These values guide our designs for each collection.

Textile printing and dyeing
We digitally print all our fabrics using AZO-free inks. Digital printing reduces material wastage and requires less washing and water usage in production. Our dyeing mills use the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 - a testing standard which means that no harmful substances have been used in production.

Trims and tags
- We preference coconut shell buttons, a sustainable material that is a by-product of coconut farming
- Our fabric labels are 100% organic cotton
- Paper tags use 100% recycled paper

Low production quantities
We are very careful each season to only produce where there is demand for it. This is less wasteful and makes our designs more special. We are also mindful that a small amount of sale items make our products more accessible for those on lower incomes, so we are comfortable for small amounts of stock to reach an end of season sale.
